Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Proto-Nazca, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A gorgeous and colorful textile fragment comprised of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers in hues of gold, sapphire, crimson, navy, citrine, and fuchsia. Above and below the central design are two enclosing border panels with tendril-like arms interwoven with one another, and a solid bar of red separates them from the primary illustration. The center panel depicts a series of abstract anthropomorphic figures, five full and one partial, who don eccentric headdresses and colorful vestments. Referred to as “lightning gods,” they are the controllers of lightning, thunder, and the skies in Proto-Nazca culture. A lovely example from ancient Peru! Mounted on fabric backing. Size (textile): 13″ W x 3.375″ H (33 cm x 8.6 cm); size (backing): 24.5″ W x 14.5″ H (62.2 cm x 36.8 cm).
Condition: Losses to areas of interior and peripheral threads, some fading and staining to coloration, and some loosening to threads, otherwise very good.
