Large Guerrero Mezcala Stone Axe God Figure- Lot 261, Auction 4/29/2019

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A hand-carved stone axe god of a substantial size with a stocky body displaying a pair of arms folded across. The figure has a smooth, string-cut groove delineating each leg and each shoulder, and the head boasts recessed eyes and lips as well as faded tab-shaped ears. Size: 3.6″ W x 6.25″ H (9.1 cm x 15.9 cm); 8.7″ H (22.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Old loss to area of legs. Minor nicks and abrasions to head, body, peripheries, and verso, with softening to some string-cut details. Light earthen deposits throughout.
