Pair of 19th C. Antique Ambrotype Photographs- Lot 216, Auction 7/1/2019

Sold

North America, United States, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A wonderful pair of antique ambrotype photographs, each in its own respective frame. First is an image of a man and woman sitting in an early two-seat Duryea automobile. This picture sits behind an embossed ovoid frame, with a protective glass panel and a thin brass perimeter inside a leather-lined wooden case half. Second is a half-portrait photograph of a seated man, wearing a black jacket and showing bony cheeks. The photo is set inside an ornate embossed brass frame with a protective glass panel and a thin, intricate brass perimeter; all components are housed inside a floral-motif thermoplastic frame. Both pictures are wonderful examples of how photography progressed as an artform! Size of largest (seated man): 4.2″ W x 4.7″ H (10.7 cm x 11.9 cm).

Condition: Both photographs have age-commensurate surface wear and oxidation. Car photograph has light foxing, tarnishing to embossed perimeter, wear to exterior case and is missing second half of case. Seated man displays tarnishing to brass frame, small chips to exterior plastic frame, and wear to interior textile border.
