Map of a Part of Washington Territory to Accompany the Report of the Surveyor General 1860-61. A very collectible early survey map of the Washington Territory that was conducted under the supervision of the Surveyor General, James Tilton. Note that the Willamette Meridian from Portland to Puget Sound and the 4th Standard Parallel extending west to Gray’s Harbor have been surveyed; however, the vast majority of the other cartographical information is relatively speculative. This said, important details include presenting the Hudson’s Bay Company’s posts at Fort Okinakane and Fort Colville, as well as the location of Lake Chelan, east of the Cascades. In addition, the US. Military Road connecting Ft. Steilacoom to Walla Walla is shown. The road runs from Seattle, up the White River, across Nachess Pass and down to Fort Walla Walla, by the valley of the Yakama River. Size: 28.875″ W x 23″ H (73.3 cm x 58.4 cm)

Furthermore, the map includes Stevens Route for the Pacific Railroad, coming up the Cedar River from Seattle, crossing over an unnamed pass south of Snoqualmie Pass and proceeding down the Yakama River. This is quite curious, as no surveys had been made or were yet planned through this region at this time.

Created in 1812, the General Land Office (GLO) was the independent agency in the US in charge of public domain lands – assuming this responsibility for public domain lands from the US Department of the Treasury. Although the Treasury had previously overseen the survey of the Northwest Territory, as this area grew and more lands were added to the United States, it became necessary to create a new agency to survey the new territories.

Condition: Minor discoloration and foxing in areas. A few, small tears to the left margin. Damp staining along folds. A few tiny perforations at fold marks.

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection
