Pair of Stingray Fossils – Heliobatis Radians

Sold

New World, Green River Formation, Wyoming, early Eocene Era, ca. 50 million years old. Two fossils from the genus Heliobatis radians, a genus of extinct stingray. They have triangular teeth for feeding on small fish and crustaceans, and, like sharks, an inner skeleton made of cartilage. As a result, it is rare to find preserved examples of this species – and here are two! Size of largest: 6.25″ L x 5.75″ W x 0.95″ H (15.9 cm x 14.6 cm x 2.4 cm)

Condition: The larger is repaired from two pieces and the full fossil is present. The smaller is repaired from five or six pieces, with small areas of loss to the edges of the fossil.

Provenance: private New York, USA collection
