Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A brass traveling icon showing a series of four small religious scenes below a scene of the crucifixion; the artwork has many small details including several individuals and landmarks, telling important stories from the Bible and lives of the saints. The icon is decorated with white and dark blue enamel. This style of icon is known as a “traveling” icon, which could be carried by priests; this time period saw missionary efforts throughout the vast Russian landmass and into neighboring countries like Japan and China. Size: 3.7″ W x 6.1″ H (9.4 cm x 15.5 cm)

Condition: Much enamel remaining. Dark patina on surface, with slight bending to form. Motifs are clear.
