Large Bolivian Amethyst Geode – Interesting Form- Lot 77a, Auction 4/4/2019

Sold

South America, Bolivia, millions and millions of years old. A brilliantly-colored geode studded with amethyst (purple quartz) crystals in its interior. The exterior surface of the rock has been cut away to create eye-like windows at the front and on the top of the large, ovoid stone. Geodes form from hollow bubbles inside of a layer of rocks. Rain or other water sources falling on the exterior of the rock cause the elements within it to flow into the bubbles, forming gorgeous crystals like these within. Trace variations in mineral content, especially iron, magnesium, or copper, can have huge effects. The purple of amethyst comes from iron in silicate. Size: 10.5″ W x 13″ H (26.7 cm x 33 cm); 20.5″ H (52.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Exterior surface is highly polished, reinforced/repaired at the front and one side. Geode interior is in fantastic condition.

Provenance: ex-private Barios collection, Bolivia
