Anasazi Red-on-White Pottery Bowl- Lot 106, Auction 4/17/2018

Sold

Southwestern USA, east central Arizona/west southern New Mexico, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), ca. 1150 to 1250 CE. A pretty example of a deep-sided red-on-white bowl. The interior is smooth and undecorated in tondo, with a ring of cross-hatched and linear red motifs directly below the rim. Along the slightly rolled out rim is a series of spaced-out steps. This would have been used by the people who lived in the Four Corners region during a time of economic prosperity and enormous growth, when large religious and population centers like Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde flourished. Size: 8.5″ W x 3.7″ H (21.6 cm x 9.4 cm)

Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces, with some overpainting along the repair lines. Fading and wear to pigment. Old collection sticker on the underside.

Provenance: private Pacific Palisades, California, USA collection; photographed and certified by Hasso von Winning in 1991
