Large Byzantine Bronze Cross w/ Stippled Design- Lot 79, Auction 12/25/2018

Sold

Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 8th to 12th century CE. A beautiful bronze cross with flaring arms. The surface of the cross is decorated with a stippled motif of Christ at the center and the Four Apostles, each shown in a bust inside a circular border, on each arm. A bronze chain link attached to a suspension loop at the top of the cross allows us to envision how it was used in life. Size of cross: 5.9″ W x 7.55″ H (15 cm x 19.2 cm); length of chain at top: 3.2″ L (8.1 cm)

Condition: Intact, with a nicely preserved chain. Stippled motifs are worn but still visible.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
