Sassanian Brass Scorpion Signet Ring- Lot 53, Auction 1/28/2019

Sold

Ancient Near East / Central Asia, Sassanian (Sasanian / Sassanid), middle Sassanian Empire, ca. 400 to 500 CE. A fine cast-brass ring with a thick band, rounded shoulders, and an ovoid bezel displaying an abstract stamped scorpion design inside a stippled border. The brass displays some areas of blue-green patina across the band, though much of the original color remains. This is quite a unique piece, recalling a prominent and influential kingdom that had great influence throughout the ancient world after the fall of the Roman Empire. Jewelry like this example bearing animal seals – scorpions like this one, birds, stags, and lagomorphs are all known – are some of their most enduring symbols. Amethyst fragments for photography purposes only. Size: 1″ Diameter x 0.875″ H (2.5 cm x 2.2 cm); US ring size 7.25.

Condition: Wearable as shown. Surface wear commensurate with age, slight bending to overall form, light fading to scorpion and stippled designs, and some darkening to copper in some areas, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits within recessed areas, and nice blue-green patina in some areas.
