Middle East, Islamic world, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A carved white marble lamp with an elegant, avian form. The body of the vessel stands on a round, flared foot ringed with deeply incised concentric circles. Above this is a deep, elongated trough that looks like a bird’s beak when viewed in profile that projects outward from the goblet-like body of the vessel. The edge of the rim and the spout have incised lines creating a nice texture along them, while the body has a cross-hatched motif around its shoulder. A striking and beautiful example! Condition: Chips and nicks on surface commensurate with age, especially around the base and on the tip of the spout. Nice surface deposits and some limited signs of use on the interior.
