Lot of Seven Luristan Bronze Items- Lot 54, Auction 11/26/2018

Sold

Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan culture, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A fantastic selection of seven cast-bronze items, including six spear points and one whetstone handle. Three spearheads have socketed shafts, mid-ribs, and blades of varying thickness. One blade has a lengthy edge and a perforated tang. One spearhead has a thin blade and a curved attachment handle. The last weapon resembles an enlarged arrow head with a streamlined head and a thin tang. Last is a curved bronze handle used to house a whetstone; this facilitates its use in honing the edges of a bladed weapon. A fabulous ensemble! Size of largest (perforated tang): 6.875″ L (17.5 cm).

Condition: Each socketed spearhead has losses to areas of shaft. All items have age-commensurate surface wear, small nicks to blade edges, and some discoloration, otherwise very good. Nice earthen deposits as well as green and russet patina throughout.

Provenance: ex-estate of John Piscopo, San Diego, California, USA. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
