Lovely Greek Attic Red-Figure Squat Lekythos- Lot 15, Auction 8/13/2020

Ancient Greece, Athens, ca. 5th century BCE. A petite, finely-decorated red-figure lekythos, a vessel used by the ancients to store precious oils and perfumes. The vessel itself is comprised of a slightly-concave and corseted base, a bulbous body, rounded shoulders which gradually taper to a narrow, tubular neck, a discoid rim, and an applied loop handle. The iconography on the front depicts a young kneeling female, possibly in the bath or gymnasium, she wears a full himation with fillet hanging on the wall behind her, ground line just below her. Size: 3.25″ W x 4.75″ H (8.3 cm x 12.1 cm)

Condition: Intact and quite excellent with strong pigment. Minor firing clouds in black areas which only adds to the interest.
