Greek Geometric Period Pottery Tankard- Lot 22, Auction 8/19/2021

Sold

Ancient Greece, Geometric Period, ca. 8th century BCE. A sizable wheel-thrown pottery mug with a planar base, a bulbous body which narrows at the neck line, a gradually-flaring rim, and an arching strap handle with a stabilizing peg in the center. The lower body is adorned with thick bands of concentric circles and dotted diamond shapes in black slip, and the neck displays a register of parabolic arches filled with tight latticework patterns. More concentric circles trace around the rim, and a large “X” is situated on the exterior of the handle. A wonderful mug created during a fascinating period in Greek history. Size: 4.8″ W x 5.25″ H (12.2 cm x 13.3 cm).

A similar example hammered for $4,375 at Christie’s, New York Antiquities Auction (sale 2755, December 13, 2013, lot 66): https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-greek-pottery-tankard-late-geometric-period-5747527-details.aspx
