Early 20th C. Nepalese Wooden Festival Mask- Lot 36a, Auction 4/23/2020

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden face mask depicting an abstract countenance, perhaps that of a deity. The face presents with almond-shaped eyes and pierced pupils, a bulbous nose with delineated nostrils, a downturned mouth with a protruding tongue, and a triangular element between the eyes. The verso is carved out for wear, and the entire composition is covered with dark brown pigment. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 5.4″ W x 7.6″ H (13.7 cm x 19.3 cm)

Condition: Minor nicks and abrasions to peripheries, face, and verso, with light fading to original pigment, and softening to some finer details. Nice traces of original pigment throughout.
