Near Choice Ancient Khmer Bronze Mirror- Lot 68c, Auction 1/10/2019
Sold
Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 12th to 14th century CE. A beautiful tinned-bronze Khmer mirror, still maintaining a high degree of polish, with a beautiful patina. Mirrors like this were often used in magic rituals, on altars, to inspire the viewer to reflect on the inner nature of things. This example presents a perfect circular form – the recessed side with concentric incised circles tracing the border – and gorgeous green patina that is remarkably reflective. Bronze objects like this one were signs of prestige, owned by the wealthy and elite in Khmer society. Size: 8.75″ in diameter (22.2 cm); 11.5″ H (29.2 cm) on included custom stand.
The Khmer perfected the technique of tinned bronze to attain an almost white finish during their day. Over time these pieces have developed exceptionally colorful patina as a result!
Condition: Near choice. Brilliantly reflective polished surface. Gorgeous green patina!
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-private United Kingdom collection, acquired in the 1970s
