Chinese Ming Dynasty Glazed Pottery Attendants (2)- Lot 98, Auction 12/5/2018

Sold

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A pair of charming tomb attendants, each mold made ceramic with beautiful glazed pigment. Each is a man, standing with his feet apart, dressed in pale blue pantaloons, an orange tunic, and a long coat of dark blue lined with pale blue. Both have heavy boots and conical hats with thick brims. Their faces are nearly identical, frozen in calm expressions with wide open eyes. Each holds a fascinating implement, perhaps representing that he is a merchant or trader of some kind. Hundreds of pottery figures like these were placed into tombs during the Ming period. These objects appeal to us because they are a window to the past, showing us the clothing styles and activities of the past. Size: 3.75″ W x 9.25″ H (9.5 cm x 23.5 cm)

Condition: Both are intact, with nicely preserved pigment.

Provenance: private S. S. collection, Los Angeles, California, USA
