Rare Egyptian Bronze Atef Crown- Lot 6, Auction 9/13/2018

Sold

Ancient Egypt, Late Period, ca. 712 to 300 BCE. A rare example of a cast bronze atef crown, with two curling ostrich feathers, one on either side, symbol of Upper Egypt and the cult of the underworld god Osiris. A uraeus – the representation of the sacred serpent worn on the headdresses of Egyptian deities and sovereigns – is below the feathers. The feathers stand atop a small, cylindrical base that would have allowed this item to be slotted into a statue or altar. Size: 3.45″ W x 6″ H (8.8 cm x 15.2 cm); 6.55″ H (16.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Interesting mottled dark brown and bright turquoise patina on surface. Small chip from the curve of one “feather.” Loss to attachment on one side.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
