Sold

Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A large and hefty alabastron, meticulously hand-carved from calcite alabaster. The vessel displays a slight-rounded stable base, a rotund body which tapered gently to a wide neck, a large mouth, and a protruding ring rim. Such vessels would have held precious scented oils or cosmetics for women to use after bathing as indicated by scenes on ancient vases depicting them in use. Size: 3.25″ W x 5.375″ H (8.3 cm x 13.7 cm).

Condition: Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks to body, base, and rim, with expected roughness across most surfaces, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.

Provenance: private Houston, Texas, USA collection; ex-private New York, New York, USA collection
