Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sulawesi Island, Toraja people, ca. early 21th century CE. A woman’s beaded dance apron (sassanq), traditionally worn by Sa’dan Toraja women during the ma’gellu’ dance, performed in honor of individuals of noble rank. The apron’s upper section is composed of a woven fiber band in pale pink with white and brown geometric shapes. Attached to the lower edge are net woven glass-beads creating hooked elements. Below, long beaded fringes descend strands of red, yellow, black, and white beads terminating in brown fiber tassels. Beaded aprons are worn during ceremonial dances held in tribute to deceased individuals of noble rank. Size of textile: 21″ L x 26.25″ W (53.3 cm x 66.7 cm); frame: 33″ L x 27″ W (83.8 cm x 68.6 cm)

Condition: Textile is intact and excellent, some minor thread pulling and fading to woven textile band. Mounted in a custom wood frame on a cotton backing and ready to display.
