Native American, Southwestern United States, Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), ca. 910 to 1400 CE. A strand of ancient turquoise beads composed of graduated, irregular tablet and nugget-form elements in pale robin’s-egg blue to deeper blue-green tones, many with natural matrix and earthen encrustation from age and burial. The beads are drilled for suspension and arranged to form a long necklace with a heavier, more substantial grouping at the front. Restrung in modern times on cord with cotton-wrapped terminal ends, presenting an expressive assemblage of early Southwestern lapidary work with a strong, timeworn surface and varied mineral character throughout. Size of strand: 30″ L (76.2 cm); largest bead: 1.25″ L x 1″ W (3.2 cm x 2.5 cm); weight: 172 grams

Condition: Wear consistent with age, including surface abrasion, edge chipping, and scattered losses. Many beads show matrix, earthen accretions, and natural fissures. Restrung in modern times on cord with cotton-wrapped terminal ends.
