In stock

Near East, Medieval period, Ottoman Empire, ca. 16th to 18th century CE. A fascinating group of five Ottoman pipe bowls cast in brass and leaded brass, each featuring a flaring bowl and short angled stem designed to attach to a longer pipe shaft. Several examples are decorated with ribbed or incised geometric ornament, reflecting the restrained yet elegant decorative vocabulary common in Ottoman metalwork. Such pipe bowls were used with early tobacco pipes throughout the Ottoman world, where the practice of smoking spread rapidly after the introduction of tobacco in the late 16th century.
