Lot 59a, Auction 4/12/2026: Chontal Stone Celt Figure – Stylized Form
$325.00
In stock
Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerica, Chontal culture, Late Preclassic, ca. 300 to 100 BCE. A finely carved Chontal stone celt figure of stylized anthropomorphic form, with a broad flattened head, incised facial features, and bifurcated legs, likely serving as both a symbolic effigy and a suspended ritual or status object. Size: 1.4″ W x 4″ H (3.6 cm x 10.2 cm)
Condition: Encrustations to suspension hole inhibit wearability as a pendant. Chip to proper left foot, as well as expected weathering with nicks and abrasions to surface. Otherwise, nice presentation with liberal remaining detail and scattered earthen deposits.
Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; ex-major gallery, Beverly Hills, California, USA, primarily acquired between 1985 and 2005
