East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine matching pair of wooden stools, known as fang deng, which can also serve as side tables. Likely carved from elm or huanghuali (rosewood), each features a woven bamboo cane inset top framed within a mortise-and-tenon constructed seat rail. Each stool stands on square-section legs joined by humpback stretchers and ending in hoof feet. The wood displays a warm brown patina with attractive grain movement and natural luster. Size: 21″ L x 21″ W x 19.5″ H (53.3 cm x 53.3 cm x 49.5 cm)
Condition: Sturdy and stable for use as side tables. Wear and abrasions as expected with age and use, with chips and gouges to wood. Cane insets are intact. Nice patina throughout.
