Rose Walton (American, XX-XXI). (1) “Heaven’s Door” paint on wood / repurposed cabinet door, n.d. (2) “The Lord is My Shepherd” paint on canvas board, 2000. First is initialed at left periphery. Second is initialed at lower right and dated on verso. Both are signed and titled on verso. A quiet, handmade theology unfolds across this pair of works, where belief is rendered not as doctrine but as story, symbol, and gentle wonder. Together, “Heaven’s Door” and “The Lord is My Shepherd” read like companion pages from a private book of visions, intimate, earnest, and touched with a childlike sense of discovery. “Heaven’s Door”, painted on a repurposed wooden cabinet door, transforms an everyday object into a threshold between worlds. A winged figure stands in profile against a deep, star-flecked blue, haloed and intent, extending a hand to a small glass knob that functions both as literal hardware and metaphysical handle. Size of larger (“Shepherd”): 14″ W x 18″ H (35.6 cm x 45.7 cm)

The door is no metaphorical flourish here. It is quite literally a door, its material history folded into the painting’s meaning. Walton’s figures are elongated and solemn, their expressions inward and contemplative, as if pausing before a decision that feels both cosmic and domestic. The surface bears the quiet wear of reuse, reinforcing the sense that grace might arrive through what is already at hand.

“The Lord is My Shepherd”, painted on canvas board in 2000, offers a more pastoral vision. A centaur-like shepherd figure with ant, part human and part animal, stands within a simplified landscape of trees, water, and open sky. The figure’s profile is calm and deliberate, its hybrid form suggesting guidance that bridges instinct and spirit. The composition echoes the biblical verse inscribed on the verso, “He Leadeth me beside the still waters / He restoreth my soul”, and the painting itself feels paced to that rhythm, measured, reassuring, and quietly strange in the best way.

Both works reflect Walton’s deeply personal visual language, shaped by a lifelong habit of making, repurposing, and imagining. Materials are humble, forms are stylized, and symbolism is direct without being simplistic. These paintings do not preach. They murmur. They invite the viewer into a world where faith is tactile, doors have handles, shepherds are mythical, and the sacred feels just close enough to touch. “Heaven’s Door” is signed and titled on the verso. “The Lord is My Shepherd” is initialed lower right, dated 2000, and titled and inscribed on the verso. Together, they form a tender and distinctive meditation on belief, imagination, and the enduring magic of things made by hand.

Artist statement: “I am a self-taught artist, never having gone to school past the 12th grade, and I have been ‘arting’ for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories of creativity are of making doll dresses out of candy wrappers and constructing animal figures from the wet mud found down near my uncles natural spring, or collecting discards of bottle caps, string, and old tin cans to make ‘people families’ with twig arms and green stick legs. I had the luxury of a childhood spent in exploring my tiny world to the fullest. From going on ‘safari’ with my 6 brothers to white mountain to look for buried treasures (white mountain was a junk pile out in the woods) to exploring natures cast offs of bird’s eggs and acorns in the meadow behind our home I was blessed to have parents who provided all of us kids (there were 11 of us) with the freedom to explore, create, and to find our own way in this world. There was never a dull moment in our childhood. This love of exploring and treasure hunting has never left me, because thru my art, I can go back to those memories and recall the sensations of discovery that i felt as a child. My art brings me back to those exquisite feelings of discovery from my childhood. I have been married for 30 plus years and have 5 incredible, wonderful, awesome, cute, kind, patient, encouraging and loving children (see, i am a typical Mom). We have lived here on Walton Road in Pennsylvania for 22 plus years. In our Walton Road home, I have tried to share with my children the freedom and love of discovery that I had when i was growing up. Our home is one big art studio, where you will always find a ‘project’ in the works. Whether it be ‘claying’, ‘dolling’, ‘painting’ , or just making up banquets out of last nights left overs, there is always a bit of magic involved. Thank you for your support, encouragement and kindness. Thank you for allowing me to share part of my world with you.” (source: artist biography on Art Majeur website)
