North Pacific, Polynesia, Hawaii, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A tall carved wooden tiki figure displaying the bold geometric features characteristic of Hawaiian-inspired folk carvings produced for the tourist trade during the 20th century. The elongated figure is carved from a single section of wood, with deeply cut angular brows, a prominent triangular nose, and an open mouth framed by stylized lips and chin. The expressive face is emphasized by strong incised lines and stepped planes, giving the sculpture a dramatic architectural quality. Traditional tiki figures in Polynesian cultures represent powerful ancestral or divine beings, often associated with protection, fertility, and the spiritual lineage of a community. During the 20th century, the imagery of tiki became widely popular in Hawaii as tourism expanded, inspiring numerous hand-carved wooden sculptures created for visitors seeking objects that reflected Polynesian visual traditions. The present example reflects that period of production, retaining the weathered texture of the wood and the bold stylization typical of mid-century tourist carvings. Notably, a carved letter “W” appears below the mouth, possibly functioning as a maker’s mark or informal signature. Mounted on a modern base, the sculpture presents a striking vertical presence and evokes the enduring influence of Polynesian carving traditions.

Condition: Losses to bark with chipping in areas. Fraying to wood and heavy weathering throughout. Great remaining detail.
