Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A slender carved wooden ancestral figure with elongated limbs, a plaited cane waistband, and raffia fiber tassels attached beneath the chin. Figures of this type were created by members of the deceased’s clan as part of Sepik funerary traditions, serving both to honor the recently departed and to embody the continuing presence and achievements of revered ancestors._x000D_

Condition: The verso posterior and feet and are drilled for a previous mount or display stand. Stable pressure fissures radiating down face and torso. Dark patina and mineral deposits. Great stable condition.
