In stock

West Africa, Mali, Dogon culture, ca. 20th century CE. A compact and expressive Dogon brass figure depicting a seated nude male with arms bent upward and hands resting against the chest. The figure sits with knees raised and drawn close to the body, creating a contained, vertical composition that emphasizes the elongated torso and prominent head. Cast in brass using the lost-wax technique, the surface displays a warm, aged patina with areas of darker oxidation. The facial features are stylized, with almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, and a composed, inward expression. The erect phallus is rendered prominently, underscoring themes of vitality, fertility, and generative power that are central to Dogon cosmology and sculptural tradition. Dogon metal figures of this type often reference ancestral presence, spiritual authority, or the life force embodied in the human form. Size: 1.8″ W x 6.8″ H (4.6 cm x 17.3 cm); 8.3″ H (21.1 cm) on included custom stand.

The restrained pose, balanced proportions, and symbolic emphasis on the body align with broader Dogon artistic conventions, in which physical form conveys metaphysical meaning.

Condition: Weathering to surface with pitting to proper left leg and some areas of small chips. Otherwise, intact and very nice with rich patina throughout.

Provenance: private Rogers, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Bosio collection, Miami, Florida, USA, 1960-2000
