West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A brass object known as an ofo, a sacred symbol of truth, justice, and authority, presenting a staff-like form intended to evoke a bundled cluster of ofo twigs, raised on 3 petite legs and fitted with paired suspension loops at one end. The top is densely worked in relief with rope, coiled, and spiral forms. Size: 6.5″ L x 2.25″ W x 1.5″ H (16.5 cm x 5.7 cm x 3.8 cm)

Condition: Patina and abrasions to surface, with areas of white oxidation.

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; ex-major gallery, Beverly Hills, California, USA, primarily acquired between 1985 and 2005
