Lot 295, Auction 3/19/2026: Early 20th C. Mali Dogon Wood Nude Female Figure
$390.00
In stock
West Africa, Mali, Dogon culture, ca. early 20th century CE. A carved Dogon wood figure depicting a standing nude female with legs slightly bent and arms arranged in a modest, inward gesture. One hand rests against her breast while the other is placed along the upper thigh, creating a pose that recalls the classical Venus pudica stance while remaining firmly grounded in Dogon sculptural tradition. The figure is elongated and frontal, with a tall cylindrical torso, softly modeled limbs, and a rounded head topped by a simplified coiffure or headdress. The surface shows signs of age and use, with areas of wear, erosion, and a dry, matte patina consistent with ritual handling. Dogon figures of this type were often associated with fertility, ancestry, and idealized womanhood, serving as objects of veneration rather than purely decorative works. The restrained facial features and calm posture emphasize balance and composure, key qualities in Dogon aesthetics. Size: 4.7″ L x 4″ W x 29.1″ H (11.9 cm x 10.2 cm x 73.9 cm); 31.75″ H (80.6 cm) on included custom stand.
This figure reflects the Dogon approach to the human form as symbolic and spiritual rather than naturalistic, combining abstraction with subtle references to bodily presence and social meaning.
Condition: Some areas of loss and chipping, as well as splitting and fissures to wood. Heavy weathering commensurate with age. Otherwise, nice presentation with rich patina. Encrustation at top of head.
Provenance: private Rogers, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Bosio collection, Miami, Florida, USA, 1960-2000
