In stock
Central Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lega people; Zambia, Lozi people, ca. late 19th to 20th century CE. A distinctive lot of two African wooden objects including a Lega Bwami society mask and a carved standing male figure from the Lozi people of Zambia. The Lega mask displays the elongated oval form characteristic of Bwami initiation objects, with narrow slit eyes, a long triangular nose, and a pale facial surface framed by a darker patinated border. Accompanying it is a small Lozi standing male figure carved in the nude with rounded limbs and simplified facial features, reflecting the restrained sculptural style associated with Zambian ritual and cultural carving traditions. Size: 4.3″ W x 9.5″ H (10.9 cm x 24.1 cm); 10.5″ H (26.7 cm) on included custom stand.
Condition: Chips to edges of mask and limbs of figure. Both have weathering and abrasions to surfaces commensurate with age, but are otherwise intact and very nice. Good remaining pigments on mask and rich patina throughout.
Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico USA collection
