Lot 287, Auction 3/19/2026: African Carved Wood Pedestal with Atlas Support Figures

$390.00

In stock

Africa, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A pedestal or low stool carved from a thick, heavily weathered cross section of a tree trunk, featuring deep surface fissures and a rough, organic texture that speaks to age and exposure. Two opposing niches are carved into the sides, one containing male and the other female figures seated with raised arms in an atlas-like pose, appearing to support the flat upper surface and suggesting a symbolic role as bearers or guardians. Size: 9.5″ Diameter x 4.5″ H (24.1 cm x 11.4 cm)

Condition: Heavy age and exposure related weathering to wood as shown, with deep grooves and old insect activity. Losses to finer details on figures, and stable but wide pressure fissure / loss to wood.

Provenance: private Rogers, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Bosio collection, Miami, Florida, USA, 1960-2000
