Lot 284, Auction 3/19/2026: Mali Bamana Wood Monkey Initiation Mask
$455.00
In stock
West Africa, Mali, Bamana / Baule peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A carved wooden monkey mask with a bold, sculptural profile and a dark, age-worn surface. The face is defined by cupped circular ears, a pronounced arched brow, narrow recessed eye slits, and an elongated nose with drilled nostrils above parted lips. Tool marks and smoothing from handling remain visible, giving the mask a strong tactile presence. Monkey imagery in Baule masquerade traditions is associated with performance and social instruction, and such masks could appear in initiation contexts and public ceremonies. Size: 11.5″ L x 6.25″ W (29.2 cm x 15.9 cm)
Condition: Minor abrasions and stable pressure fissures and striations. Nice patina throughout.
Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico USA collection
