In stock
West Africa, Nigeria, possibly Afo or related regional tradition, ca. 20th century. A carved wooden kneeling female figure with an enlarged head and elongated facial planes, shown with hands resting on the thighs and the legs folded beneath the body on a rectangular base. The coiffure is incised with radiating patterns and painted in a blue pigment, while arm bands and a layered waist ornament accent the otherwise nude torso. The dark, lustrous surface shows areas of mineral buildup, perhaps from offerings rubbed into the surface. Size: 7″ L x 7″ W x 22.5″ H (17.8 cm x 17.8 cm x 57.2 cm)
Condition: Surface wear, abrasions, pressure / shrinkage fissures to the torso. Lustrous patina and areas of mineral buildup. Good remains of blue pigment.
