John Gardano (American?, active XI century). Abstract. Oil on canvas, 2012. Signed and dated at lower center. A vibrant orchestration of color and gesture, this 2012 oil on canvas by John Gardano pulses with layered movement and luminous energy. The vertically oriented composition is built from interwoven passages of translucent blues, saturated yellows, soft greens, and flashes of warm rust, applied in sweeping strokes, drips, and looping linear accents. Broad fields of color overlap and bleed into one another, creating a sense of depth without fixed perspective, while gestural marks arc across the surface like calligraphic traces of motion. Gardano balances structure and spontaneity. Beneath the expressive splashes and poured paint, subtle rectilinear scaffolding emerges – faint grid-like suggestions and vertical bands that anchor the composition. Areas of opacity contrast with translucent washes, allowing earlier layers to remain visible and contributing to a richly textured surface. Size: 23.75″ W x 47.75″ H (60.3 cm x 121.3 cm)

Notably, fine bristles from the artist’s brush remain embedded in the paint throughout the canvas, particularly concentrated in the lower left quadrant, emphasizing the immediacy of process and the physicality of its execution. The palette is fresh and contemporary, with bright citrus tones set against cooling blues and pale veils of white. The result is a work that feels at once atmospheric and kinetic, inviting prolonged viewing as shapes and relationships gradually reveal themselves. Signed and dated 2012, the painting stands as a confident example of Gardano’s abstract vocabulary, emphasizing color, rhythm, and layered process as primary expressive tools.
