Lot 239a, Auction 4/3/2026: 18th C. European Painted Enamel Portrait Miniatures (6)
$390.00
In stock
Central and Western Europe, France and Austria, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A charming group of six painted enamel portrait miniatures depicting elegantly attired women, each rendered with delicate brushwork and refined coloration characteristic of European decorative arts of the 18th to 19th century. The compositions capture idealized feminine beauty, with softly modeled faces, elaborate coiffures, and period dress reflecting both Rococo grace and Neoclassical restraint. The largest example is housed behind glass within a custom velvet matte and wooden frame and bears the signature “Dorval,” suggesting attribution to a practiced enamelist working in the French tradition. The second largest, similarly presented in a wooden frame, carries an indistinct signature with the initials “H.H.,” hinting at another accomplished but presently unidentified hand. Size of largest portrait: 2.25″ Diameter (5.7 cm); of largest frame: 4″ W x 4″ H (10.2 cm x 10.2 cm)
A third framed miniature presents a poetic scene of a young maiden seated beside a birdcage containing a nude cupid, an allegorical motif likely symbolizing love restrained or the guarding of the heart.
The remaining three miniatures, smaller in scale and preserved in protective cases, continue the theme of aristocratic portraiture. One depicts a dark-haired woman who may represent Empress Josephine, while another portrays a powdered lady whose appearance recalls Marie Antoinette, though such identifications remain speculative. Each is executed with fine attention to detail, from the translucency of skin tones to the subtle highlights in jewelry and fabric. Collectively, the group reflects the enduring appeal of enamel portrait miniatures across the late 18th to 19th century, where they functioned as intimate keepsakes, tokens of affection, or expressions of social identity, prized for their craftsmanship and personal resonance.
