Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Aztec, ca. 500 to 1520 CE. A basalt effigy carving in basalt or scoria (volcanic flow rock), of a seated anthropomorphic figure shown in a hunched, forward-facing posture with slightly bulging cheeks and deep-set eyes that stare ahead with a trance-like intensity. The head supports a shallow incensario or ritual bowl, integrating the vessel into the figure’s form and suggesting ceremonial use. Size: 7.25″ W x 10.5″ H (18.4 cm x 26.7 cm)
Condition: Old losses to the legs and rim of bowl. Natural yellow inclusion or mineral deposit on right eye.
