Lot 181, Auction 3/19/2026: Jalisco Stone Axe Head

$455.00

In stock

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A finely ground Jalisco stone axe head of broad, ovoid form, carefully shaped and polished to a smooth, tactile finish. The blade presents a rounded cutting edge and gently tapering body, with symmetrical lateral notches that create subtle shoulders near the upper register, likely facilitating hafting to a wooden handle. The surface displays a mottled earthen patina in warm brown and tan tones, consistent with age and burial. The overall silhouette is compact and balanced, reflecting both functional intent and aesthetic restraint. Stone celts and axe heads such as this were essential tools in Pre-Columbian West Mexico, used in woodworking, land clearing, and possibly as symbols of status or authority. In certain contexts, finely finished examples also served as ritual or funerary offerings. This example stands as a strong representation of Jalisco lapidary skill, where utility and refined stoneworking converge in a single, enduring form. Size: 5.8″ L x 4.2″ W (14.7 cm x 10.7 cm)

Condition: Softening to blade edge and expected surface wear, but, otherwise, intact and very nice. Old collection label on one side.

Provenance: private Sheffield, Massachusetts, USA collection, by inheritance, acquired before 1970
