China, Qing to Republic, late 19th to mid 20th century CE. A carved nephrite jade pendant in the form of a stylized mythical creature, worked in pale celadon-green stone with natural mottling and areas of warm russet coloration. The figure is modeled in an elongated, tapered profile with a pronounced crested head and softly defined facial planes, the body carved with smooth rounded volumes and restrained incised detailing. The surface is well polished, highlighting the jade’s translucency and the totemic character of the design. The reverse is drilled for suspension, indicating use as a personal ornament or amulet. Size: 1.125″ W x 3″ H (2.9 cm x 7.6 cm)
