East Asia, China, late Qing to Republic period, Miao culture, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A textile baby carrier back sling, ornamented with silk embroidery on cotton and silk panels. The lower section is made of indigo-dyed cotton, joined to upper panels of red, black, and gray silk backed and reinforced with indigo cloth for durability. The centerpiece depicts a young boy holding a fan while riding a dragon-fish – a motif symbolizing good fortune – surrounded by auspicious imagery including phoenixes, butterflies, peonies, and lotus blossoms. The side strap panels are decorated with red wool and cotton appliques. Baby carriers served both as vital dowry items and as indicators of a woman’s artistry and status within her community. Such textiles are worn as part of ceremonial attire, the intricacy and richness of the embroidery reflect not only personal accomplishment but also family prestige. Mounted on black cloth in a modern frame and ready to display. Size of textile: 32.5″ L x 22″ W (82.6 cm x 55.9 cm); frame: 38.5″ L x 29″ W (97.8 cm x 73.7 cm)
Condition: Staining and discoloration to panels, some pulling to silk threads and small losses to fibers in a few areas. Some creasing to center. Mounted in a modern frame, and has dust accumulation on the surface, but can easily be cleaned with compressed air. Frame upper corner has a chip to the surface, but can be touched up with paint. Ready to display.
