East Asia, China or Japan, Qing / Meiji era, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A large curved wooden panel carved in relief with a laughing, rotund Budai (Hotei) figure, shown holding a fan and a crescent-shaped ingot, and standing on a money sack. The expressive carving highlights rounded facial features, flowing robes, and a relaxed seated posture, with the surface showing a warm, aged patina. In Feng Shui symbolism, the ingot represents wealth and prosperity, while the fan signifies the dispersal of troubles, together conveying blessings of abundance, happiness, and positive energy for the home or business. Size: 15.5″ L x 4″ W x 24″ H (39.4 cm x 10.2 cm x 61 cm)
Condition: Weathering to surface from exposure to elements, and pressure fissures, but intact and stable condition. Dark gray-black patina.
