East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A standing figure constructed from lacquered and gilt papier-mache and canvas, depicting a robed attendant holding a peach in one hand while the other forms a socket intended to receive a separate attribute. The figure’s stylized hair buns, calm expression, and flowing robes reflect traditional Chinese sculptural conventions associated with temple or domestic altar figures. Size: 14″ W x 36″ H (35.6 cm x 91.4 cm); gold quality: 22% to 31% (equivalent to 5K+ to 7K+)
Condition: Fragile and delicate. Surface layers have fissures and active flaking when handled, with areas of lacquer loss. The underlying woven canvas structural layer is visible in some areas. Indentations to surface, especially on forehead. Fading to gold gilt and red lacquer.
