In stock

Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerica and the Andes, various cultures, ca. 200 BCE to 1500 CE. A group of seven Pre-Columbian pottery miniatures including four whistles, one figural pipe, and two small suspension vessels. The whistles include a Narino conch-form whistle, an Aztec parrot whistle, a Moche blackware whistle modeled as two mating zoomorphic figures, and a Costa Rican bird whistle, each demonstrating the playful and ritual use of sound-producing ceramics in ancient American cultures. Completing the group are a small figural pipe and two miniature suspension vessels, objects that likely functioned as personal adornments, ritual implements, or votive offerings within Mesoamerican and Andean societies. Size of largest (conch): 4″ L x 1.5″ W (10.2 cm x 3.8 cm)

Condition: All whistles still function as instruments. Blackware bird and conch whistles have been repaired with break lines visible. All have weathering with nicks and abrasions to surfaces. Good remaining details and scattered earthen deposits throughout.

Provenance: private Lake Worth, Florida, USA collection, acquired via descent in April 1997; ex-private American collection in Cyprus, acquired between 1957 to 1969, brought to USA in 1969
