Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerica, various cultures, ca. 500 BCE to 1500 CE. A fascinating group of nineteen Pre-Columbian stone artifacts consisting of a finely carved black stone head or maskette accompanied by eighteen stone beads of varied form and material. The maskette is skillfully rendered with stylized facial features, including almond-shaped eyes and a compact sculptural profile, suggesting it may have once served as a pendant, amulet, or small ritual object. The accompanying beads display a range of shapes and sizes, from cylindrical and tubular examples to rounded and irregular forms. Each bead was carefully shaped and drilled, demonstrating the remarkable lapidary traditions of ancient Mesoamerican artisans who worked hard stone materials using abrasion techniques and stone drills. Size of largest (head): 2.8″ L x 1.8″ W (7.1 cm x 4.6 cm)

Stone ornaments such as these were widely used across Mesoamerica as elements of personal adornment and ceremonial regalia. Beads were often strung together as necklaces or incorporated into garments and ritual attire, while carved heads or maskettes could function as protective amulets or symbolic pendants. Collectively, this assemblage offers a compelling glimpse into the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities that defined the ornamental arts of ancient Mesoamerican cultures.

Condition: Nicks, chips, and abrasions throughout, with some scuffs and small losses to a few. Otherwise, all very nice with scattered earthen deposits. Beads are wearable.
