Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A canvas thangka painting of White Tara in a serene frontal pose, seated in full lotus position on a lotus throne and encircled by halo, with jewelry and a ornate coiffure. Her face has the third eye on her brow, and the iconography continues with additional eyes painted on her palms and the soles of her feet, emphasizing her all-seeing compassion and protection. The deity’s right hand lowers in a gift-bestowing gesture while her left hand holds a flowering lotus stem beside her shoulder. The painted canvas is set within a dark floral cotton or silk border and retains a woven upper sleeve that once housed a suspension dowel for hanging. Mounted in a clear modern acrylic case. Size of textile: 38″ L x 20″ W (96.5 cm x 50.8 cm); acrylic frame: 22.5″ L x 1.75″ W x 40″ H (57.2 cm x 4.4 cm x 101.6 cm)
