Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala to early Maya culture, ca. 600 BCE to 100 BCE. A striking greenstone bead necklace accompanied by five carved face pendants, presenting a group of early Mesoamerican personal ornaments. The necklace is strung in modern times, and too short for wearing, and is composed of three graduated strands of small disc beads in varied tones of mottled green, separated at the shoulders by two reddish quartz stone spacer beads. The five pendants are carved in the characteristic Mezcala manner with simplified facial planes and minimal features. Size of necklace strand: 18″ L (45.7 cm); largest pendant: 1.8″ L x 1.75″ W (4.6 cm x 4.4 cm)
Condition: Minor nicks and abrasions to beads. Necklace is strung in modern times and too short to wear unless a clasp is added. Softening to carved stone pendants and abrasions.
