$1,950.00
In stock
East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A monumental carved wood screen set within a fitted frame and removable base, centered by a high-relief panel depicting the legendary Takasago couple, Jo and Uba, spirits of Japanese folklore who symbolize a long and harmonious marriage. The figures stand on a misty shore beneath a gnarled pine tree, holding a rake and broom, with a crane flying above the waves. The upper register is decorated with gilt clouds and a deep red moon against a dark ground, evoking a moonlit scene associated with the legend. The verso is carved with a blossoming cherry branch and a bird is depicted with remnants of nacre applique, while the lower panel shows bamboo leaves and pinecones with red and green applique accents and an incised signature. The upper corners are reinforced with decorative copper openwork brackets. Size: 47.5″ L x 20.5″ W x 69.5″ H (120.6 cm x 52.1 cm x 176.5 cm)
Condition: Scratches, and abrasions to the lacquer and carved wood consistent with age and handling. Areas of paint and lacquer loss, including scattered chips and small losses along edges and raised areas. Age cracks and wood shrinkage visible throughout, and the central carved panel is now removable due to shrinkage and has a large loss at one corner. The base has grooves likely from metal support brackets that are not missing. Losses to the applique and nacre panels on the bird and foliage on the verso. The screen remains stable and displays well.
