Europe. Migration Period, ca. 5th–7th century CE. Created during a very tumultuous period in European history. Rome had just fallen and numerous competing cultures were vying for control over southern/western Europe. Silvered Bronze Belt / Strap Fitting.

A cast bronze belt or strap fitting of cross-terminal form, decorated on the face with punched and incised geometric motifs including a central rosette/starburst and banded registers. The surface retains areas of silvering, with a stable green patina overall. The reverse with three rivets for attachment to a leather strap, consistent with early medieval dress fittings and belt assemblages of the Migration Period. Size: 2.5″ L x 1.5″ H (6.4 cm x 3.8 cm)

XRF analysis shows this is comprised of silver over a bronze base.

Condition: Silvered areas showing wear else intact.

Provenance: private Dayton, Maryland, USA collection; ex-private F. B. collection, Maryland, USA, acquired between 1990 to 2010
