Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE; Northern Europe, Viking culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE; Europe, Medieval period, ca. 5th to 15th century CE. A varied and tactile assemblage of twenty-seven metal attachments and ornaments, spanning centuries of use from the Roman world through the Medieval period. Cast and worked in bronze, brass, copper alloy, and lead, the group presents a rich survey of personal adornment and utilitarian fittings, each shaped by the hands of its maker and the wear of time. The forms range from openwork pendants and strap fittings to mounts, studs, and decorative appliques, with motifs that include geometric piercing, floral rosettes, and stylized figural elements. Several pieces reflect Romano-British craftsmanship, while others carry the bold, compact forms associated with Viking metalwork. Size of largest: 2.4″ L x 1.4″ W (6.1 cm x 3.6 cm)
Together, the collection offers a layered glimpse into daily life across ancient and early medieval Europe, where such objects served both practical and decorative roles, fastening garments, embellishing belts, or signaling identity through ornament.
Please note that some of these pieces contain up to 50% lead.
