$585.00

In stock

North America or Siberia, Pleistocene Epoch, ca. 2.6 million to 10,000 years ago. A group of four matched pairs of fossilized mammoth molar panels, each cut and polished to a smooth finish that highlights the distinctive layered structure of ancient enamel and dentine. Originally prepared as knife handle scales, these flat rectangular sections also read as standalone objects, displaying dramatic linear banding formed through millennia of mineralization. The coloration has been enhanced with dye, accentuating the natural patterning while preserving the underlying fossil structure. Size of single panel: 4.125″ L x 1.75″ W (10.5 cm x 4.4 cm)

Condition: Chips and nicks to the peripheries. And larger chips to corners on several, and stable fissure in the enamel of the smallest panels. Coated in clear resin to protect the surfaces, and color is enhanced by dye.

Provenance: private Hagar collection, Wildwood, Missouri, USA
